Important Tips to Care For Your Outdoor Dining Furniture

If you’ve spent the time and money to find just the right outdoor dining furniture for your backyard, garden, or patio, you don’t want that investment of time and money to suffer loss. Here are three important tips to care for your outdoor dining furniture — or any outdoor furniture and furnishings, for that matter:

Tip 1:
Use proper finishes to protect that furniture or furnishings. Sounds pretty obvious, doesn’t it? If you have wooden items, make sure you maintain their paint and/or stain, and make sure you use a quality sealant to weatherproof every surface of each piece. Years ago, I had a workman build a wooden porch and porch steps onto the front of our very old house. I was ignorant about this obvious need for protection, and so was he. “Nah, it’s weather treated lumber,” the handyman explained, “and you don’t need to stain or seal it. It’s supposed to weather in order to look good.” Sure. I discovered the hard way that even weather treated wood deteriorates over time and you absolutely DO need to use a good sealant on it. And, if you have metal furnishings on the patio or in the backyard — whether for dining or otherwise — check with craftsmen or do-it-yourself merchants in your area. Find out what they use and what they would recommend to protect your cast iron garden furniture or aluminum items.

Tip 2: Use sturdy, weatherproof covers or put your things in a secure shed during the off-season. If you live in an area where theft might be a problem, don’t risk expensive stuff by leaving it outside year around or when your home is vacant for any period of time. If you live in a secure neighborhood, this may not be a problem for you. But you should never leave your stuff on the patio or in the garden without weather protection from very good furniture covers — or by putting it in a storage shed or room in your home, or in your garage. Why spend money on nice things, then fail to protect them from weather or theft??

Tip 3: Be a good neighbor and share outdoor dining fun when you can. Yes, that’s right, inviting your neighbors over for an occasional outdoor party, backyard barbecue, garden party, or whatever, is actually an excellent way to protect your outdoor furnishings and furniture investment. Think of this as part of your personal “neighborhood watch” program: If your neighbors are your friends and feel comfortable sharing a friendly party or two — they are much more likely to keep a careful watch for burglars, vandals, and the occasional accidentally tipped over dining table. Should you be away from home during bad weather, a friendly neighbor might even help protect your outdoor property with the coming of sudden bad weather or natural catastrophe. You certainly don’t want to antagonize your neighbors, right? Why not make them part of your home protection plan?
